Mixed Media Father's Day Card

Hello, Lisa Hoel here. This week at Topflight Stamps our theme is Anything Goes! I made a Father's Day card to give to my husband. Blue is one of his favorite colors. Surprisingly, I used no stamps for this card – just stencils and die cuts. ;-)

AALL & Create Fungi Mixed Media Father's Day Card

Hi friends!  It's Autumn Clark from SewPaperPaint with you today to kick off our week of Father's Day cardmaking inspiration.  I used the lovely new toadstool stamps by Tracy Evans for AALL & Create and have several ideas to share with you.  First up is a Father's Day card with a fun mixed media background.

I dipped my stamped panel into ink puddles and then clear embossed.  I went along the edges of the panel with Distress Crayons  in brown and green to accent the embossed pivots.   I did the same process on a second stamping of the toadstool heads and flicked off even more of the clear embossing powder to get more pivots.  I gave the panel a splashing of PaperArtsy Fresco Chalk Acrylics and blotted the paint while wet, which achieved sort of a encaustic effect. 

Finally I added a typed "fortune cookie" sentiment with a punny graphic I know my guy will dig. 

My next card features a resist technique using the Darkroom Door resist crayon.  I stamped my image and then colored the areas I wished to highlight with the crayon.  I swiped Prism dye ink pads DTP onto my panel and the crayon resisted the ink, leaving the white space.  I heat the crayon to melt the shiny surface, then added a bit of watercolor shading as shown.

I painted the spots on the fungi with more Fresco acrylics. 

And another little card using the same technique.  I especially love the white framing with the crayon. The sentiment is from Deer stamp #222.  I can't stress enough how much I love to use these inks DTP, here I just did stripes and it worked a charm.  Fun and easy!

Father's Day | Indigo Blu Bike

Hi everyone Jenny here!  The team are creating cards for Father's Day this week, to give you inspiration in advance of the big day next month. 

For my card, I'm using the 'Ride Long' stamp by IndigoBlu.  It's a mounted red rubber set with a fantastically detailed image, and some unique sentiments - great for the dad in your life who rides!

To create my card I took panel of rustic looking cardstock and stamped the main bike image in a pale grey ink.   I then stamped it again on some copy paper and fussy cut it out.  

I added the mask over the top of the bike with some removable adhesive. I then overlaid the Strobes stencil by Visible Image so the centre was over the bike, and fixed it with some tape.   This stencil is great for all sorts of cards, to create a focal point on your card.

I used some light brown ink and blended it out from the centre of the stencil, fading out towards the edges. I was careful not to go all the way out to the edges to avoid the square edges of the stencil appearing on the card.   

I then went back in with some darker brown ink and blended it just around the centre of the stencil.

I peeled up the stencil and then stamped the sentiments in black ink directly over the stenciled image.  It was mounted onto a white card base, and as a finishing touch, I added Nuvo Clear Drops to the headlight of the bike - I love doing this for vehicle or window images.

Funny Punny Farm Animal Cards

Hi Topflight fans! Katzelkraft critter stamps have some of the best expressions, and the Katzelkraft Farm Animals Stamp Set does not disappoint. These animals are perfect for whimsical, punny cards. 

For my first card, I used the cow grinning from ear to ear under the sentiment, "My grandfather was a knight," which I printed from my computer. Inside, the card liner continues, "His name was Sir Loin." (yuk yuk). And under that sentiment, I stamped out the steak stamp from the Lawn Fawn "Let's BBQ" stamp set.

For the second card, I used the laughing donkey stamp along with the karate person kicking from the Diemond Dies Karate Die Set #1 to make a silly Fathers Day card. I printed from my computer the partial sentiment, "Hope your Father's Day is..." and then I added the kicking person plus the donkey to pictograph the words, "Kick Ass."

To maintain a CAS look, I first die cut the kicking person from white fun foam, but because I thought the dimension was not enough to give it enough visual weight to stand up to the donkey, I added a lemon yellow kicking person die cut over top. 

So that the karate person didn't look like he was floating, I used a Tim Holtz Shatter Stencil and Tumbled Glass Distress Ink to indicate where the kick had hit and shattered a background of glass. I masked off the donkey before blending on the ink through the stencil using a Clarity Stamp Stencil Brush, which enabled me to gradually soften the broken glass look to blend to the white of the card front.

Visible Image - Stencil as a Focal Point

Hi Everyone and Welcome to the Topflight Stamps blog!  It's Jenny here, and today I have a super simple but effective way to use your stencils to create a focal point on a your project.   I chose an image that would work for a Father's Day card for something a little different.

The stencil I'm using today is the Visible Image Skull Shadow.  

To create the card, I embossed the skull into a panel of 4.25 x 5.5" watercolor cardstock using my die cutting machine and a die cutting sandwich with a tan mat and embossing plate.  I then used an ink blending tool, and blended Vintage Photo and Hickory Smoke inks all over the Skull image.  Because it is raised up, you can use a light hand and catch the skull outline itself rather than the background.   I then went over the entire panel with Black Soot, and included the eyes and nose by useing a mini ink dauber. 

I roughly masked off the black background with post-its and then spritzed the skull with water to get a mottled look.   To get the weathered look, I used a sanding grip around the edges and rubbed gently over the skull image which, again because it is raised, wears down at the edges.

I adhered the entire panel over a card base and then added a heat embossed sentiment in copper.   I hope you like it - while it's a card for a very specific recipient, you can totally apply this technique to all sorts of stencils and colors!

You're a Classic - With Darkroom Door

Hi everyone and welcome to the Topflight Stamps blog.  It's Jenny here, and today I have a fun card for you  showcasing an image from the Darkroom Door Classic Cars set.  It makes a great birthday card or Father's Day card which is coming up soon. 

The stamp set is super high quality red rubber, with three large, detailed images, and lots of co-ordinating sentiments.  A great one to up your stash for masculine projects!

To create my card, I first created the wall of the road 'tunnel'.  I trimmed a watercolor cardstock panel to A2 (4.25" x 5.5") and ink blended Distress Ink in Fired Brick all over it.  I then ran it through my die-cutting machine with a brick embossing folder from my stash. To create some more dimension between the bricks, I also used Walnut Stain and Vintage Photo which I gently blended over the top so that it only adhered to the raised areas.  To create the tunnel, I used a circle die and die cut it from the brick wall, and trimmed off the bottom 1.5". I then re-inked round all of the edges. 

On a card base, I adhered a panel of black cardstock, and a strip of dark grey cardstock along the bottom.  I then popped the brick tunnel up on the front with foam tape.  I added some hand trimmed gold glitter cardstock to look like the central road markings.

For the car, I stamped it in copic friendly ink, coloured it with a variety of grey and blue copics. I added clear Wink of Stella to the metal trim and headlights, and white gel pen for highlights, then trimmed it out and popped it up on foam tape in the centre.  I added Limoncello Nuvo Drops to the headlights to make them pop.   

The sentiment was stamped in embossing ink and embossed with white embossing powder, trimmed out and popped up on foam tape.
